John Matson has over 10 years of experience as an English teacher at both the college and secondary levels. In 1999, Dr. Matson graduated summa cum laude, with highest honors, from the English Department at UCLA. He went on to earn his Ph.D in English at Princeton University, where he was awarded two of the University's top Fellowships:
The Whiting Foundation Dissertation Fellowship and
The Fellowship for Distinguished Dissertation Work in the Humanities at Princeton University's Center for Human Values.

In 2003, an early chapter from his dissertation, Marking Twain: Mechanized Composition in the Twain Era, was solicited for publication in The Norton Critical Edition of Mark Twain's Puddn'head Wilson and Those Extraordinary Twins. Dr. Matson's work focuses on the intersection of literature, American studies, cultural theory, and the history of technology.
